Israeli authorities are planning to demolish around 100 housing units in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian officials, raising concerns over further displacement in the region.
The governor of Tulkarm said on Monday that the Israeli army intends to demolish 25 residential buildings in the Nur Shams Palestinian refugee camp, located in the northern West Bank, later this week.
Abdullah Kamil told Agence France-Presse that Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories, a body affiliated with the Ministry of Defense, had informed him and other local officials of the planned demolitions.
COGAT did not respond to requests for comment from AFP.
Faisal Salama, head of the popular committee in Tulkarm refugee camp, which also falls within the city’s municipal boundaries, said the decision affects about 25 buildings comprising around 100 housing units.
He added that local authorities were informed by Israeli military and civil liaison officials that the demolitions are scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 18.
Salama said residents of the camp have been notified and homeowners whose properties are slated for demolition have been contacted.
In response to AFP inquiries, the Israeli army said it was reviewing the matter.
