Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said today, Monday that the army's main duty is to maintain stability and security of the country.
Abdul Mahdi added in a statement published by the Iraqi News Agency, that the main duty of the Iraqi armed forces is defending Iraq.
“The difficult circumstances we are facing require unity, maintaining the stability of Iraq and preserving its sovereignty," Abdul Mahdi noted.
He explained: "We are currently facing critical conditions and grave challenges affecting Iraq and threatening its future, while the Iraqi army is stronger than ever and possesses sufficient experience to maintain the security of the country and preserve its future."
Earlier, Iraqi military bases, where American forces are deployed, have been subjected to repeated missile attacks in the past weeks.
The United States accused "Iran and its allies" of these attacks, vowing to respond firmly if any of the Americans or their Iraqi allies are affected by these attacks.
It is worth mentioning that, the US military launched a number of defensive airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against five sites belonging to Hezbollah Brigades-an Iranian backed militia-following the killing of a US civilian contractor, according to the independent.
Trump administration blames the group for a rocket assault on a military base near Kirkuk, northern Iraq, which resulted in the death of an American worker and the injury of several US and Iraqi soldiers.
