Iraqi Parliament Announces Names of 25 Presidential Candidates

Today, Monday, the General Secretariat of the Iraqi Council of Representatives announced the names of the 25 candidates for the post of President of the Republic, amid a Kurdish split over the consensual candidate for the position.

The final list of candidates for the presidency of the republic included the current Iraqi president, Barham Salih, and former Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

It also included Judge Rizgar Muhammad Amin, one of the judges who tried former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, in addition to Abdul Latif Rashid, a former minister who ran as an independent despite his membership in the Union Party.

The Accountability and Justice Commission in Iraq announced earlier on Monday that it had completed checking the names of the presidential candidates and had officially handed over the results to the presidency of the parliament.

The Iraqi Parliament is supposed to elect, after its first session, which witnessed the submission of two deputies to the challenge before the Federal Court responds, and within 30 days, a new president of the Republic, who in turn must designate a Prime Minister within 15 days from the date of his election, who will be the candidate of the "largest parliamentary bloc according to the constitution.
