The media office of the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced in a statement on Saturday that Iraq agreed to supply Lebanon with fuel for six months.

The statement said: “Iraq affirms its support for the security and stability of Lebanon in all its components, in addition to its commitment to contribute to its reconstruction,” adding that “the Prime Minister agreed to grant the Iraqi Ministry of Oil an exception to equip Lebanon with fuel for six months.”

Iraq continues to supply fuel to Lebanon under the Heavy Fuel Oil Agreement, which was first concluded in July 2021, where the Lebanese government supplies fuel in exchange for providing services that include health care to Iraqi citizens.

Under the agreement, Lebanon is replacing heavy fuel oil with gas oil that can be used to operate power plants.

These plants have suffered for years of working with partial production capacity, but the electricity crisis has worsened further in light of the financial crisis that limited the state's ability to secure the fuel needed for operation.
