Iraq...1st Arab Country to Record 8,000 Daily Coronavirus Recoveries

On Wednesday, Iraq recorded the highest singly-day recoveries of coronavirus (COVID-19) with over than 8,000 cases in the last 24 hours.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported on Wednesday 3,574 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the nationwide infections to 485,870 .

The new cases included 1,066 in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, 473 in Duhok, 453 in Erbil, 309 in Sulaimaniyah, and 224 in Kirkuk, while the other cases were detected in the other provinces, according to ministry statement.

The ministry also reported 60 new deaths and 8,479  more recovered cases in the country, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 11,128 and the total recoveries have reached 417,235.

A total of 2,912,818 tests have been carried out across the country since the outbreak of the disease in February, with 18,691 done during the day, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the ministry spokesman Sayf al-Badr said in a press release that the decision to start the new school year will be decided by the Higher Committee for Health and National Safety, headed by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, but the committee did not take any decision yet.

"We expect that starting the school year decision will be decided in the coming days," said al-Badr.

Al-Badr also said that the ministry stressed the necessity of applying health-protective measures, such as wearing masks and social distancing at the start of the new school year.

"Our message to students and their families is that the coronavirus pandemic is dangerous and it must be taken seriously," he added.

Iraq has taken a series of measures to contain the pandemic since February when the first coronavirus case appeared in the country.
