Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on US President-elect Joe Biden to return to the nuclear deal.

In a televised speech, Rouhani said, "The ball is now in the court of the new U.S. administration, and if Washington returns to Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal, we will also fully respect our commitments under the deal."

Moreover, he added that outgoing US President Trump's policy of "maximum pressure" towards Iran has failed completely, noting, "Trump's political career is over."

Later today, Biden will take the oath as the new US president. Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris is to be sworn in alongside him in Washington DC, which has been fortified amid fears of civil unrest.
