Iran initiated a criminal inquiry Saturday investigating an assault on East Azerbaijan province's new governor, a former Revolutionary Guards brigadier, during his inauguration ceremony, according to Iranian media.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a man storming the platform and hitting Governor Abedin Khoram as he prepared to deliver a speech in front of Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi.

The attacker was subsequently thrown out of the conference hall by the stewards.

It was the 55-year-first old's public appearance since President Ebrahim Raisi appointed him governor last Sunday, according to IRNA.

“According to some sources, the attacker was an employee of the (Guards') Ashura Corps with personal motives,” it said.
