Iran has introduced a new policy to collect transit fees in cash from vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, framing the move as payment for security and insurance services provided along the strategic waterway.

According to information attributed to Iran’s central bank and reported by local media, the measure applies to commercial ships and tankers that obtain official authorization to transit the strait. The decision establishes a new regulatory framework governing financial aspects of maritime navigation in the area.

Authorities indicated that the fees will be paid exclusively in cash, a step widely interpreted as an effort to secure immediate inflows of hard currency while bypassing complications linked to international banking restrictions and sanctions.

The cost of transit will not follow a fixed rate. Instead, it will be calculated based on technical assessments that consider the type and volume of cargo, as well as the level of security risk associated with each voyage. This variable pricing model reflects both economic and security considerations tied to current regional conditions.
