“Allah - there is no deity except Him”: Allah is the only true God, without any partners.
“The Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence”: “The Ever-Living” is He who possesses perfect life, and “The Sustainer of all existence” is He who is self-sufficient and needs no one, and who oversees and protects all things.
“Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him”: He is not overcome by drowsiness or sleep, due to the perfection of His life and His self-sufficiency.
“To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth”: He is the Creator and Owner of all things, and all beings are His servants. “Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His permission?” (Quran 2:255): No one dares to intercede except by His permission, due to His greatness and majesty.
“He knows what is before them and what is behind them” (Quran 2:255): His knowledge encompasses what was and what will be, what is apparent and what is hidden.
“And they do not encompass anything of His knowledge except what He wills” (Quran 2:255): No one knows anything of God’s knowledge except what God teaches them.
“His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth” (Quran 2:255): The Throne is the place where the feet of the Lord, the Exalted and Glorified, rest. It is a very magnificent creation, as Ibn Abbas and others have said, and the Throne is even greater. And He is not burdened by their preservation: The preservation of the heavens and the earth does not weigh heavily upon Him, nor is it difficult for Him.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great: He is the Most High in His essence, power, and might, above His creation, and the Most Great, than whom there is none greater.
