The External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, attended the National Day celebrations of Egypt, hosted by the Egyptian Embassy in New Delhi.
In his address, Dr. Jaishankar extended his best wishes to the Government and people of Egypt, emphasizing the robust trajectory of bilateral relations and high-level visits in 2023.
Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the elevation of India-Egypt relations to a strategic level during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Cairo in June 2023.
He noted that this new phase of cooperation is marked by substantial activities and a renewed enthusiasm between the two nations.
Economic cooperation between India and Egypt has intensified and diversified, with significant strides in the IT industry and the opening of the Egyptian market to India's agro-exports, particularly wheat.
Over 50 Indian companies have invested in Egypt's economy, focusing on pharmaceuticals, electronics, and green energy sectors.
The External Affairs Minister also spoke on the expanding defense collaboration, which includes regular bilateral exercises, special forces interactions, and frequent visits by Indian naval ships to Egyptian ports.
He emphasized that the defense industries of both countries are reviving an old tradition through new activities and partnerships.
Cultural cooperation is another important pillar of India-Egypt relations. Dr. Jaishankar praised the growing popularity of Yoga in Egypt, a sentiment echoed by Prime Minister Modi during the International Day of Yoga 2024.
At various international forums, India and Egypt have demonstrated close cooperation. Dr. Jaishankar appreciated Egypt's participation in the G20 during India's presidency and reiterated India's strong support for Egypt's membership in BRICS. He fondly recalled his warm working relationship with the former Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and expressed hope for similar rapport with the new Foreign Minister.
Dr. Jaishankar concluded by reaffirming the Indian government's commitment to advancing the India-Egypt strategic partnership, underscoring the significance of continued collaboration and mutual benefit.
