India plans to expand its aviation infrastructure, with a long-term vision to develop a network of more than 400 airports by 2047. The initiative aims to make air travel widely accessible and strengthen connectivity across the country, particularly by linking smaller cities to the national air transport system, reports ANI, according to TV BRICS.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, "Our mission is to make air travel easily accessible to every Indian citizen.[…] In 2014, India had 70 airports. Today, the number of airports in India has increased to more than 160. We have activated more than 100 aerodromes in the country and, along with this, launched affordable flight schemes for our citizens.[…] It is estimated that by 2047, India will have more than 400 airports. This will be a very large network."

India is also positioning itself as an important aviation gateway connecting the Global South with other regions. Alongside infrastructure growth, attention is being given to environmental sustainability. The country is increasing efforts in the development of sustainable aviation fuel, with the goal of becoming a major producer in the coming years and contributing to greener air transport.

Technological advancement is another priority. According to the source, India already plays a role in manufacturing and supplying aircraft components and is expanding domestic capabilities in aircraft production. Future-oriented solutions, including electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, are being explored as part of efforts to modernise air mobility and reduce travel times.

Overall, the civil aviation sector in India continues to show steady growth in passenger traffic, fleet expansion and related services. Progress in maintenance, pilot training, aerospace manufacturing, cargo logistics and advanced air mobility supports the country’s ambition to strengthen its role in the global aviation landscape while improving accessibility and efficiency at home.
