Recently released official consumption expenditure data for 2022-23 reveals India’s stellar achievements in poverty alleviation. Data highlights that the population living in extreme poverty has declined from 12.2% in 2011-12 to 2% in 2022-23.

2. Highlighting this achievement further, these estimates neitherconsider the free/subsidized food (wheat and rice) supplied by the government to approximately two-thirds of the population, nor utilization of public health and education.

3. Despite a high real per capita consumption growth of 2.9% per annum since 2011-12, India has also managed to lower economic inequality.

4. The data, particularly corresponding to rural areas, also highlights the success of the poverty alleviation programs of the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The strong thrust on resource and income redistribution, ensuring universal access to modern cooking fuel, electricity and piped water, housing, healthcare and financial inclusion have indeed been at the heart of the Government and the official data reveals the grand success of these programs.
