´The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently engaged in intensive consultations with the Egyptian government to determine the timing of the fifth and sixth reviews of Egypt’s economic reform program, a senior IMF official confirmed on Friday.
Jihad Azour, Director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, said that discussions are ongoing between the Egyptian authorities and the Fund’s technical team, with a focus on key areas of economic reform.
Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, Azour highlighted several core themes under discussion, including strengthening the role of the private sector, improving the business climate, and boosting investment flows.
“The outcome of these consultations will help define the schedule for the IMF mission’s visit to Cairo to conduct the next two program reviews,” Azour stated.
He added that the IMF remains in close coordination with Egyptian authorities to ensure continued progress on the reform track, which has already delivered “positive results in terms of economic stabilization.”
The reviews are part of Egypt’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement, signed in 2022, aimed at supporting macroeconomic stability, structural reforms, and resilience in the face of global shocks.
Egypt is navigating a challenging economic landscape marked by inflationary pressures, currency volatility, and a pressing need to unlock fresh external financing. The upcoming reviews are expected to be pivotal for the disbursement of further IMF tranches and the potential unlocking of additional support from international partners.
