Culture Minister Enas Abdel Dayem said on Monday that naming Cairo as the capital of Islamic culture for 2020 by ICESCO, proves Egypt's pioneering position in the Islamic world.

Addressing a press conference on Monday at the Cairo International Book Fair, Abdel Dayem noted that the selection of Cairo by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) aims at boosting cultural ties among the Islamic nations and highlighting values of peace and tolerance.

Cairo is rich in its outstanding cultural heritage, Abdel Dayem stated, pointing out that the selection comes in conjunction with the presidential directives to declare 2020 as year of culture.

All sectors of the Ministry of Culture will participate in the program of the year, so that multi-level activities program will be started on April 5.

"The Culture Ministry prepared a program to celebrate this occasion in coordination with other ministries like the Ministries of Tourism and Antiquities, Youth and Sports, Higher Education and Education," she said.

Meanwhile, Director of Culture at ICESCO Naguib el-Ghayati said Cairo is a city where co-existence spreads as it gathers different and many civilizations and cultures, therefore, naming it as the capital of Islamic culture will benefit the organization. Ghayati also pointed out that there is a project for revamping historical monuments in Cairo, which has six sites, listed in the Muslim Heritage.
