On Sunday, a huge explosion and subsequent gunfire was heard in Somalia's capital in Mogadishu, leaving many causalities.

According to preliminary reports, militants from the Al-Shabab terrorist group attacked Hotel Afrik, located near the airport of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Before the attack, a car bomb was blown up.

There was no immediate word from Somali officials or the AU mission on Sunday's incident.

The pull out of U.S. troops from Somalia was one of former US President Donald Trump’s last official actions.

It is unknown whether US President Joe Biden will reverse the withdrawal of U.S. military personnel from Somalia after he became the 46th U.S. president.

The absence of U.S. troops in Somalia has taken on a greater significance because the country is weeks away from the February 8 presidential election, which militants have previously attempted to disrupt.
