How to Avoid Springtime Illnesses with Dr. Saeed

After the cold and foggy weather of winter, spring comes refreshing the earth's beauty. But spring could be a foreboding for common illness and diseases which are known by springtime illnesses.

The fluctuations in temperatures and wind jitter the nasal passages, weaken the immune system to fight the invaders and increase the vulnerability to infection.

Here is Dr. Baher El Saeed, a famous pharmacist on Facebook, shows what are the common diseases in this time, mainly the virus diseases like sinusitis. Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses are small, air-filled channels behind your cheekbones and forehead.

Sinusitis Symptoms

In his weekly interview with InBox program aired on Sada El Balad Channel, Saeed said that sinusitis' symptoms are a headache or facial pain, runny nose, and nasal congestion as well as bad breath.

He added that people with weak immune systems are more likely to get infected by sinusitis, explaining that there are two types of sinusitis namely; acute sinusitis and chronic one.

Sinusitis Treatment

Dr. Saeed noted that there are some measures that should be taken to ease the effect of sinusitis. Drinking much of liquids and warming your face are very important to heal the disease. Also sleeping on a high pillow plays a vital role in breathing well.

He also advised the audience by chewing gums and bees waxes. "Eating honey with drops of lemon on it boosts the immune system," Saeed continued.

Nasal sprays are another way for treatment, Saeed underscored that there are two types of nasal sprays in Egypt; cortisone nasal spray and nasal decongestant sprays. Overusing the decongestant sprays more than three to four days could be harmful, so the cortisone one is safer and better.

Health tips note:

If you are vegetarian and search for sources of calcium instead of milk products, Dr. Saeed says oranges are great sources for calcium for the human body, as they contain 7% of the body's daily need of calcium as well as white beans, broccoli, and cabbage.
