The military spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi Group, Yahya Saree, announced on Wednesday that a ballistic missile was launched at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, marking a significant escalation in the group’s ongoing campaign against Israel amid the war in Gaza.
In a statement, Saree said that the missile strike was part of a broader “double operation,” which also included drone attacks targeting two aerial facilities in the cities of Jaffa and Haifa, which he referred to as "occupied territories."
Israel’s Home Front Command reported that air raid sirens were activated in Jerusalem, the Dead Sea region, and Tel Aviv in response to what was described as a missile launch from Yemen. The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that it had successfully intercepted the missile.
Israel’s Channel 12 news reported that several inbound flights were forced to return mid-air after the missile alert, disrupting operations at Ben Gurion Airport.
Earlier this week, the Houthi military spokesman declared the start of operations aimed at imposing a naval blockade on the port of Haifa, in response to what the group calls intensified Israeli aggression on Gaza. He urged all shipping companies to reconsider using the port, citing recent Houthi success in halting operations at Israel’s southern port of Eilat.
In recent months, the Houthis have increasingly asserted their involvement in the regional conflict, claiming repeated missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli territory. They have also declared a full aerial blockade on Israel as retaliation for the ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which they accuse of causing severe humanitarian crises by blocking the delivery of food and medical aid.
There has been no immediate confirmation from independent sources regarding the extent of damage from the Houthi strikes. Israel has yet to respond to the latest claims beyond confirming the interception.
