The ancient mosques of Cairo have a special place in the hearts of many people who come to visit them from all over the world, especially during Ramadan, to praise the importance of these mosques and their archaeological and historical value, in addition to recognizing their moral value because they are affiliated to notable Islamic figures.

Al-Hussain Mosque

Al-Hussain Mosque is located in Old Cairo, Gamaliya District, and its opposite is Al-Azhar Mosque. Next to it is Khan el-Khalili, one of the most popular religious sites in Cairo, as hundreds flock to it daily to pray and visit.

In addition to being a place of prayer and worship, the mosque is a cultural and scientific beacon for the people of Cairo.

The mosque that dates back to the year 1154 is considered one of the oldest heritage mosques in the region. Its historical importance is mainly due to the fact that it is one of the oldest Fatamied mosques in the region, and it's believed that it features the coffin and the head of Emam Al-Hussain, according to historians.

Mohamed Ali Mosque

The grand Mohamed Ali Mosque located in the heart of the Salaa Eldin Citadel in the 18th century mirrors the domed silhouette of the Hagia Sophia standing across it and is one of only a handful of mosques in the world to boast of six minarets.

A great example of classical Ottoman architecture with its numerous domes, the mosque is an iconic fixture of the city’s landmarks.

Visitors must enter by the side entrance from the Castle passages which will take you past the courtyard. It is as large as the mosque’s interior and the largest among all Egypt's mosques!

El-Aqmar Mosque

El-Aqmar Mosque or ''Gray mosque'' dates back to the Fatimid era. It was built in 1125 during the caliphate of ''El-Amir Ahkami''.

The mosque is known for its façade which is elaborately decorated with inscriptions and geometric carving. This is the first mosque in Cairo to have such a decoration. Also, it's the first to have a façade that follows the line of the iconic street.

El-Aqmar Mosque was restored in the nineteenth century during the reign of Muhammad 'Ali by Amir Sulayman Agha al-Silahdar, who built the mosque across the street.

Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah Mosque

After extensive renovations, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa and Minister of Endowment Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa has recently inaugurated the Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, in Al-Muizz Street in Ancient Cairo.

The project was in collaboration with the Indian Bohra community and under the supervision of the Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish antiquities sector of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the General Administration of Historic Cairo.

In his address, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities praised the efforts of those who contributed to the maintenance and renovation of this historic mosque, stressing the importance of promoting the Islamic monuments of Historic Cairo.

Meanwhile, Gomaa expressed his happiness with the opening of this iconic mosque before the holy month of Ramadan.

He also thanked the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for its tremendous efforts in the restoration work that takes place in various ancient Egyptian mosques.

It's worth mentioning that the mosque was severely damaged by an earthquake and was subsequently restored by Sultan Baybars II al-Jashankir in 1302.
