The Deputy Chiefs of Mission from the United States, Canada, and Mexico — Evyenia Sidereas, Colin Lake, and Hector Ortega respectively — gathered in Egypt to commemorate the historic FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by their three North American nations for the first time.
Speaking at the event, the diplomats emphasized the significance of this unprecedented collaboration and the immense excitement surrounding the tournament. “This World Cup is not just a sporting event; it’s a global moment bringing countries and cultures together,” said Evyenia Sidereas, Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States.
They highlighted the tournament’s unique format, with matches hosted across multiple cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, creating a platform that combines the love of football with wide commercial and cultural opportunities. Restaurants, museums, and businesses across the three countries will showcase their heritage and hospitality to fans worldwide.
The speakers also discussed the critical importance of high-level football competition, noting that no game in the World Cup is easy or guaranteed. Emphasizing focus and determination, they expressed confidence in teams like Egypt, Belgium, Iran, and the Netherlands delivering thrilling performances.
“Football unites us all,” Colin Lake remarked, noting the shared passion is akin to awaiting a much-loved television series finale in Egypt, capturing the intense anticipation fans have for the games.
The gathering underscored how sports diplomacy serves as an effective bridge between nations, transcending language and cultural barriers, and harnessing a shared passion to deepen international connections.
