The FIFA World Cup has witnessed a number of crazy incidents that stunned everyone through the years. So, here are the top five extraordinary moments during FIFA history.

India Did Not Play in World Cup 1950 Despite Qualifying

The 1950 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by Brazil after World War II, was associated with too many troubles.

India received the invitation to play in the game after the majority of the countries decided against traveling to South America. Media outlets reported that the team was denied to play cause they were barefoot.

However, India at that time appreciated Olympics more than World Cup since it was just the fourth edition back in 1950. All India Football Federation (AIFF) did not deem it fit to send a team halfway around the world via ship.

Sailen Manna, the captain of the Indian Football team in 1950, mentioned that they had no idea about the World Cup, as the Olympics was everything to them.

Croatian Defender Josip Simunic Gets Three Yellow Cards

During the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, referee Graham Poll sent three yellow cards to Croatian defender Josip Simunic.

Croatia played Australia at the German World Cup's group stage.

Simunic received his second yellow card when the referee mistakenly thought he was an Australian player.

Later in the match, the Croatian defender was dismissed after being issued a third yellow card.

Uruguay’s Luis Suárez Biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini

In 2014, Uruguay’s Luis Suárez bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the FIFA World Cup. FIFA  banned Suárez from all “football-related activities” for four months.

“Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” said Claudio Sulser, the chair of the disciplinary committee, which met late into the night in Rio de Janiero.

“The disciplinary committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr. Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated.”

Giuseppe Meazza’s Shorts Off While Playing

In the 1938 FIFA World Cup hosted by France, Giuseppe Meazza captained Italy in the semi-final against Brazil.

While running to take the kick, his shorts fell down, as the elastic in them had ripped; he held them up with his left hand, but he still managed to score, beating the Brazilian goalkeeper Walter from the spot by placing the ball into the corner.

Bobby Moore and the Missing Bogotá Bracelet

In 1970, England captain Bobby Moore was arrested for stealing a bangle from a Bogotá hotel, in which the team was staying.

Moore was detained in Colombia for four days.

The arrest provoked a widespread controversy in the UK, including a diplomatic intervention at the behest of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and across the world in general.

Later on, the Colombian authorities announced that Moore was innocent of any wrongdoing, but the case was not formally closed until 1972.
