Online bullying is a huge problem that poses a threat to the existence of the most talented celebrities in Egypt and can have a catastrophic impact on them.

Being an adorable celebrity doesn't make you immune from the power of cyberbullies - as these three stars discovered for themselves, when they became targets of the trolls.

Shikabala

Despite being part of one of the biggest Egyptian football clubs of all time, Mahmoud Abdel-Raizk Shikabala was targeted by cyberbullies while he was part of Zamalek team in the previous African final, who attacked him because of his race.

Lately, Police forces arrested 11 people in Beheira governorate for uploading a video to social media showing them holding a mock funeral for the 34-year-old player following’s Zamalek’s loss.

Moreover, Police arrested four people in Luxor governorate for filming and uploading on social media platforms another video, which many considered racist, showing a black dog wearing a Zamalek T-shirt and being compared to Shikabala.

In 2020, he told the newspaper that he was able to shrug off the comments but what really affected him was when the abuse reached members of his family.

"You can say whatever you want about me, I’m not really bothered," he said.

"But when it starts to upset people I care about or I hear about it from my mum and my wife, then that’s a problem.

"I thought we’d moved forward. If that was said to me on the street or if someone said it to me to my face or whatever then something could be done about it.”

It's worth mentioning that a number of sports stars and actors have publicly expressed their support for Shikabala and condemned the bullying against him on social media.

Yosra El Lozy

Egyptian charming actress Yosra El Lozy was subjected to online bullying after a bully commented on a post on her official Instagram account describing her with “mother of the deaf” because of her daughter’s poor hearing.

Lozy gave the bully a manners lesson in a respectable way and raised awareness about the right way to describe little children who suffer from difficulty in hearing.

Furthermore, Lozy indicated that the right expression to describe them is “hard of hearing”.

Sawsan Badr

In another incident, the Egyptian star Sawsan Badr was exposed to online bullying after she published through her account on "Instagram", an obituary to the Syrian director Hatem Ali, who died in 2020.

Badr wrote: "Survival of God, the respected talented director Hatem Ali ... very difficult news ... God have mercy on him."

For one of those who followed her account to respond to her, wishing her death, he wrote: "Your Obelk"?

Ultimately, we do realise that the people who are bullying you are the ones who are insecure and try not to take it personally.
