Heavy snow is still falling in areas along the Sea of Japan coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced on Friday morning.

The agency noted that some regions had recorded two to three times the average accumulation for this time of year.

It said the heavy snow continues to fall in the Tohoku region, Niigata Prefecture, and mountainous areas in northern Kanto, due to a low-pressure system and a cold air mass.

Reports revealed that the amount of snowfall observed during the three hours through 8 a.m. on Friday was 10 centimeters in Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture, and 9 centimeters in Yuzawa Town, Niigata Prefecture.

About 140 centimeters of snow had heaped up in Shonai Town in Yamagata Prefecture, and 126 centimeters in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture.

Up to 30 centimeters of snow is expected in Tohoku, Niigata, northern Kanto and Nagano Prefecture, and 15 centimeters in the Hokuriku region during the upcoming 24-hour period through Saturday morning.

In the same vein, weather officials are warning of possible traffic disruptions caused by the snow, urging caution for snowslides, snow falling from roofs, and blackouts caused by snow accumulating on power lines.
