A Greek court on Wednesday sentenced Harry Maguire, the defender of Manchester United and the England national team, to 15 months in prison with a suspended sentence after finding him guilty of assault and attempted bribery related to an incident that occurred in Greece six years ago.
According to British broadcaster Sky Sports, the court convicted Maguire on three charges stemming from an altercation on the island of Mykonos in August 2020. The charges included minor assault, resisting arrest, and attempting to bribe police officers.
The court initially issued a sentence of 21 months, but the judges later reduced the punishment to 15 months and 20 days, in addition to imposing a fine of €1,500.
Maguire’s legal team had spent years attempting to clear the player of the accusations. The England international did not attend the latest court session as he was preparing for Manchester United’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Despite the conviction, the suspended sentence means Maguire will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense during the probation period.
The case dates back to a high-profile incident during Maguire’s holiday in Mykonos in 2020, which drew significant media attention at the time and has continued to follow the defender throughout his career.
