The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has revealed that he recently sent Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, a series of practical suggestions aimed at restoring a deal that had previously facilitated the safe exportation of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea.
Guterres' letter was issued before a meeting between Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
"I think we've put forward a proposal that could serve as the foundation for a renewal, but it must be a stable one," Guterres said.
According to reports, Russia withdrew from the arrangement in July, one year after it had been established with the aid of the United Nations and Turkey.
Moscow cited obstructions to its food and fertilizer exports as well as insufficient exports of Ukrainian grain to countries in need as the reason for its decision.
The Black Sea grain deal's primary objective was to address a worldwide food crisis that was exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russia and Ukraine are both prominent grain exporters.
