Gunmen attacked a U.N. convoy and killed five Afghan security force members who were escorting him on the main highway heading east from Kabul, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Thursday.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, an Afghan interior ministry official said they believed the insurgent Taliban were behind it.

UNAMA said in a tweet that the U.N. family in Afghanistan mourns the loss of the Directorate of Protection Service troops in the Surobi district, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of the capital.

“No U.N. personnel was hurt, or vehicle effected in an attack which hit a DPS directorate of protection forces vehicle that was escorting a UN convoy,” it added.

An official revealed that the U.N. convey came under fire in the Tang-e Habreshim area, which killed a driver whose vehicle then veered off the road into a river, and left four other occupants dead as well.

In the same vein, Afghanistan has seen a nationwide spike in bombings, targeted killings, and violence on the battlefield, as Taliban militant group has conducted scores of targeted attacks against civilians and military officials in recent years.
