President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau has announced a partial closure of the border with Senegal following violent clashes between two Muslim groups over a local mosque in southern Senegal.
In a statement reported by AFP, President Embaló said, "I have decided to immediately close this section of the border to prevent any escalation of violence. Our security forces will strictly enforce this measure."
The border between Guinea-Bissau and Senegal stretches approximately 300 kilometers.
The clashes erupted in southern Senegal during the Eid al-Adha celebrations on Monday.
The dispute centers around control of a mosque in the city of Gounas, located just a few kilometers from the Guinea-Bissau border.
According to the Senegalese Ministry of the Interior, the violence resulted in one fatality and around 20 injuries.
