Born and raised in Alexandria, El-Gendi started her breakthrough in cinema after winning the beauty contest in Cairo in 1958.

Moreover, the talented actress married twice, first to the late iconic actor Emad Hamdi, with whom she had one Boy, Hisham, and second to filmmaker Mohamed Moktar.

The recipient of various accolades, including 5 awards for best actress for her role in the cinema title “al-Raghba” (“The Desire”), the International al-Rubatt Film Festival in Morocco, the Damascus International Film Festival in Syria and the 2009 and International Cairo Film Festival in Egypt, she was the country's highest-paid actress in the 1980s.
