Guardian: Attempts to Deprive Russia of Permanent Membership in UNSC

The British Guardian newspaper said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing attempts to isolate him diplomatically as punishment for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Diplomats are also looking into whether there is a basis for removing Russia from the membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

It is worth noting that Russia presides over the council now. The presidency of the Council rotates on a monthly basis among the 15 member states, which allows the holder of the presidency to shape his poetic agenda and chair its meetings.

Russia's envoy to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzias, was chairing an emergency meeting of the Security Council in New York last Wednesday night, with Putin announcing the start of the attack on Ukraine.

The Russian envoy began the session by reading a text sent to his phone from the Kremlin justifying the attack, insisting there was no invasion and said a special military operation was being carried out in Donbas.
