The Canadian House of Commons, Tuesday, elected Greg Fergus as its new speaker to be the first Black Canadian to hold this office.

Fergus came ahead of Sean Casey, Chris d'Entremont and Elizabeth May.

After the victory of Fergus, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: "Today you're the first Black Canadian to become speaker."

Trudeau added: "It should be inspiring for all Canadians, especially younger generations who want to get involved in politics."

During his speech, Fergus vowed to improve the decorum in the Commons.

He added: "Respect and decorum — I'm going to be working hard on this and I need all your help to make this happen."

"Respect is a fundamental part of what we do here. We need to make sure that we treat each other with respect and we show Canadians that example. There can be no dialogue unless there's a mutual understanding of respect."
