Greek writer and translator Pitsa Komotsi said her participation in the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair stems from a profound emotional connection she developed with the UAE after translating three poetry collections by Emirati authors Nujoom Al Ghanem, Ibrahim Al Hashmi, and Kholoud Al Mualla.

Speaking at the Greece Guest of Honor pavilion, Komotsi noted that translating Emirati poetry opened a window onto the region’s literary scene, social fabric, and cultural heritage. She added that the generosity and warmth she encountered in the Arab world inspired her to visit Sharjah and join the global event.

Komotsi stressed that writing and translation are deeply intertwined, describing both as creative acts that require imagination, sincerity, and a nuanced understanding of meaning. She also highlighted growing interest in classical literature and poetry in both the Arab and Greek worlds, expressing her hope to introduce more Arabic readers to contemporary Greek writing.

She said book fairs foster direct human connection, proving that “literature unites people and bridges cultural distances.”
