Greek Prime Minister (PM) Kyriakos Mitsotakis, his wife and the accompanying delegation visited on Tuesday St. George’s Church at the religions complex located in Old Cairo, on the sidelines of their current visit to Egypt.

They were received by general manager of Fustat antiquities Sohair Qonswah, and Essam Ragab, general manager of old Cairo antiquities.

While touring the historic site, they expressed their admiration for the coptic church, lauding the Antiquities Ministry’s efforts to preserve Egypt’s great heritage.

Noteworthy, the Church of St. George is a Greek Orthodox church within the Babylon fortress in Coptic Cairo.

It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St George under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa.

The church dates back to the 10th century. The current structure was rebuilt following a 1904 fire; its construction was finished in 1909.

The church contains Coptic icons of two saints, dating back to the 11th and 15th centuries; it also comprises two Roman towers and the oldest Nile scale.
