The Swedish Football Association has officially appointed Graham Potter as the new head coach of the national team, signing him on a short-term deal aimed at rescuing Sweden’s troubled World Cup qualifying campaign.
Potter takes over from Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Kosovo, a result that effectively ended Sweden’s hopes of direct qualification from Group B.
The Swedish FA moved swiftly to secure Potter’s services, motivated by his longstanding interest in Swedish football and his previous success in the country.
Potter is highly regarded in Sweden due to his impressive stint with Östersunds FK, where he achieved three promotions in four seasons and won the Swedish Cup in 2017. His return has been met with enthusiasm from Swedish fans hoping he can restore the national team’s competitive edge.
Potter’s first matches in charge will be a crucial away game against Switzerland, followed by a home fixture against Slovenia.
While qualifying directly for the World Cup appears out of reach, Sweden still has a chance to reach the playoffs through its performance in the 2024–2025 UEFA Nations League.
