The 80th annual Golden Globes took place Tuesday night live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
The awards show that has been founded in 1944 to honor the best TV and film productions is trying to recover from a racial exclusion scandal after a 2021 Los Angeles Times story revealed that the organizers had no black journalists among their 87 members.
The Golden Globes was boycotted last year with many celebrities such as Tom Cruise giving back their Globes. NBC also opted not to air the ceremony and reform in the form of inclusivity began to take shape.
The beleaguered Golden Globe Awards came back to NBC this year after the network dropped the 2022 telecast, following the Los Angeles Times report.
The event was hosted by Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
Carmichael reminded the stars who flocked back to the ceremony about the scandal that temporarily drove the show off of television, kicking off the telecast by introducing himself as “the Black face of an embattled White organization.”
On the film side, Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical “The Fabelmans” and Martin McDonagh’s Irish period piece “The Banshees of Inisherin” won top prizes for drama and comedy, respectively.
Speilberg also claimed Best Director for his movie.
On the TV side, ABC comedy "Abbott Elementary" — which boasted the most nominations of any show with five — built off of its Emmy momentum and went to the head of the class, winning best comedy honors and Golden Globes for Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams.
Meanwhile, HBO's "The White Lotus", enjoyed the privilege of converting its four nominations into two awards, one for best limited series and another for Jennifer Coolidge.
Moreover, the Game of Thrones prequel "House of the Dragon" claimed the best drama award.
Elsewhere, Cate Blanchett, Angela Bassett, Austin Butler, Jeremy Allen White, Zendaya, and Kevin Costner scored trophies.
In addition, Murphys were honored: Five-time Globe winner Ryan Murphy was given the Carol Burnett Award and Golden Globe Award winner and six-time nominee Eddie Murphy received the 2023 Cecil B. DeMille Award.
The event also featured a recorded message from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who made a similar appearance at the Grammy Awards in April.
