Hany, the most popular bear in Giza zoo, died suddenly at the age of 21, which caused a state of sadness among the workers and officials at the zoo.

Official sources at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced his sudden death and stated that the General Authority for Veterinary Services will form a scientific committee to conduct an autopsy, determine the death cause.

The sources added that an official report will be submitted to the Minister of Agriculture on the death cause.

The committee includes experts from the Animal Health Research Institute and the Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, at Caìro University.

The sources revealed that the causes of death are still unknown, pointing out that the death cause might not be related to Hany's age as the life span of a bear extends about 25 to 40 years, noting that it is known that bears in the wild die at a younger age than captive bears.

There are 4 bears remaining in the zoo, a male and 3 females, Salwa, Nevin, and Samah, who become widows for the first time.

In 2013, Hany sparked controversy on social media after leading the death of 3 female bears, Nabila, Farah, and Lulu, all of the American black bear lineage. They died in a battle to marry him.
