The Ghana Football Association has confirmed the death of Dominic Frimpong, a winger for Berekum Chelsea, following an armed attack on the team’s bus.
The incident occurred as the squad was returning from a league match against Samartex on Sunday, along the Juaso to Bibiani road in southern Ghana.
In an official statement, Berekum Chelsea said their bus was ambushed by armed robbers who blocked the road before opening fire.
“Masked men carrying guns began shooting at the bus while the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire,” the club said.
The Ghana Football Association expressed “shock and deep sorrow” over Frimpong’s death, describing the incident as a tragic loss not only for his club but for Ghanaian football as a whole.
“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion embodied the spirit of the league,” the statement read.
The federation added that it will review and strengthen security measures for teams traveling to domestic matches in the future.
