Under the new Champions League format, each team played eight matches against different opponents in the league phase, with four matches at home and four away. The revamped system added greater competitiveness before the tournament advanced to the decisive knockout rounds.
Eight teams qualified directly for the Round of 16 after finishing in the top eight of the league standings: Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, featuring Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting CP, and Manchester City, which includes Egyptian international Omar Marmoush.
The remaining spots were decided through the playoff round. Atlético Madrid advanced past Club Brugge, while Bayer Leverkusen eliminated Olympiacos. Bodø/Glimt knocked out last season’s runners-up Inter Milan, and Newcastle United progressed at the expense of Qarabag.
Atalanta secured qualification by eliminating Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid advanced after defeating Benfica, Galatasaray overcame Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over fellow French side Monaco to complete the Round of 16 lineup.
