Day 17 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup brought the Round of 16 to a close with two high-profile clashes, as European giants Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund secured their places in the quarter-finals with hard-fought victories.

Real Madrid 1–0 Juventus

Real Madrid edged past Juventus with a narrow 1–0 win at Hard Rock Stadium to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The only goal of the match came in the 53rd minute when Gonzalo García rose above the defense to head in a precise cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Spanish side looked sharp in the second half, and despite Juventus pushing hard in the final 20 minutes, Madrid’s defense, anchored by Thibaut Courtois, held firm. Michele Di Gregorio was also impressive for Juventus, making key saves throughout the match to keep the margin slim.

Kylian Mbappé made his return from illness, coming off the bench in the second half to lift Real Madrid’s tempo and morale. Federico Valverde stood out in midfield and was named Man of the Match for his relentless pressing and smooth ball distribution. Real Madrid now advance to face Borussia Dortmund in what promises to be a high-intensity European clash.

Borussia Dortmund 2–1 Monterrey

Borussia Dortmund punched their ticket to the quarter-finals with a 2–1 victory over Mexican side Monterrey at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Serhou Guirassy was the hero of the night, scoring twice in the space of ten minutes during the first half. His first came in the 14th minute and was quickly followed by a second in the 24th, both goals assisted by the dynamic Karim Adeyemi.

Monterrey tried to mount a comeback after Germán Berterame pulled one back early in the second half, but Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a string of crucial saves to protect the lead.

The German side’s win did come with a downside: Jobe Bellingham picked up a yellow card that will rule him out of the quarter-final against Real Madrid—where he would have faced his brother Jude.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovač described the victory as a “bonus,” praising his squad’s resilience and tactical discipline. Dortmund will now face a stern test in the quarter-finals against a Madrid side filled with confidence and star power.
