Day 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup delivered pure footballing drama and two unforgettable upsets that will echo through tournament history.

Brazilian side Fluminense stunned European powerhouse Inter Milan with a disciplined and daring 2–0 victory, while Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal shocked the world by defeating reigning Champions League holders Manchester City 4–3 after extra time in an epic quarterfinal clash.

From explosive starts to late-game heroics, the night proved that passion, precision, and belief can overpower even the most elite clubs. Here are the top moments and match highlights from an extraordinary evening of world football.

Fluminense 2–0 Inter Milan: Brazilian Brilliance Stuns the Nerazzurri

In a stunning quarterfinal showdown, Fluminense defied expectations and eliminated Inter Milan with a confident and disciplined 2–0 victory. The Brazilian side wasted no time asserting themselves, taking the lead just three minutes in.

A deflected cross landed kindly for Germán Cano, who stooped low to head the ball through the legs of Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. That early goal sent shockwaves through the stadium and seemed to rattle the Italian defense.

Inter tried to settle into possession, but Fluminense's high press and relentless energy disrupted their rhythm.

With veterans like Thiago Silva anchoring the backline and goalkeeper Fábio producing a series of crucial saves—particularly in the 62nd and 82nd minutes—Fluminense stayed in control. Their pressing game, orchestrated under coach Renato Portaluppi’s bold, chaotic style, left Inter struggling to connect in midfield.

The final blow came in stoppage time. Substitute Hércules picked up the ball at the edge of the box and curled a stunning finish into the bottom corner, putting the match out of reach and sending Fluminense into wild celebrations. It was a performance of precision, belief, and tactical intelligence—one that eliminated a European heavyweight and confirmed Fluminense as a real title threat.

Al Hilal 4–3 Manchester City: Saudi Shock as Hilal Make History

In one of the most unforgettable matches in Club World Cup history, Saudi giants Al Hilal pulled off a jaw-dropping 4–3 extra-time victory over Premier League champions Manchester City.

What began as a routine night for City quickly turned into a rollercoaster of momentum swings and drama that ultimately saw the Saudi club earn a place in the semifinals and rewrite tournament history.

City started strong and opened the scoring in the 9th minute, with Bernardo Silva finishing off a controversial move that involved a deflection off a defender’s arm. Al Hilal appealed for a handball, but the goal stood.

The second half, however, belonged to the Saudis. Just 42 seconds after kickoff, Marcos Leonardo headed in the equalizer, taking advantage of a rebound to ignite hope for his side.

Barely 10 minutes later, Al Hilal struck again. Malcom, fed by a clever ball from João Cancelo, danced past his marker and tucked the ball into the far corner, giving Al Hilal a shocking 2–1 lead.

City responded quickly as Erling Haaland capitalized on a scrappy corner in the 55th minute to level the match once more. But despite City’s firepower, it was Al Hilal’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou who stole the show, pulling off a string of sensational saves to keep his side alive during relentless City attacks.

The game went to extra time, where Kalidou Koulibaly rose high in the 94th minute to head in a Ruben Neves corner, swinging momentum back toward Al Hilal.

On May 31, Simone Inzaghi lost his 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 UCL final with Inter. Just days later, he left the club after four years to join Al Hilal.

Again, City wouldn’t go quietly—Phil Foden equalized with a cool finish in the 104th minute. Yet the last word went to Marcos Leonardo.

After a saved header from Milinković-Savić, Leonardo pounced on the rebound and calmly finished to complete his brace in the 112th minute. The final whistle marked one of the biggest upsets the tournament has ever seen.

This win wasn’t just a triumph for Al Hilal—it was a statement. Beating Manchester City, the defending European champions, in such dramatic fashion sent a powerful message about the rise of Saudi and Asian football on the global stage.
