German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has officially become the most-capped goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup history after reaching 21 appearances in the tournament, setting a new all-time record.

The 40-year-old surpassed former France captain Hugo Lloris, who previously held the record with 20 World Cup matches.

Neuer matched Lloris during Germany’s opening match against Curaçao before moving ahead in the following game against Côte d’Ivoire.

The milestone adds another historic achievement to Neuer’s legendary international career.

The German goalkeeper first appeared at the World Cup in 2010 and has since remained a central figure for the national team, including playing a key role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph.

Neuer’s return to international duty for the 2026 World Cup marked his fifth appearance in the competition, following a brief international retirement.

His longevity and consistency have further strengthened his status as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.

With 21 World Cup appearances, Neuer now ranks third among all German players in tournament history.

He sits behind Lothar Matthäus, who holds the record with 25 matches, and Miroslav Klose with 24.
