On Thursday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the Turkish threats against Greece in the Mediterranean Sea.

Scholz statements came during his visit to Athens and having talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In addition, the German Chancellor asserted that the Nato members shouldn't question the sovereignty of their lands, referring to the historical maritime dispute between Greece and Turkey over the Aegean Sea.

On his side, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he was ready to represent a “hand of friendship” to end the tensions with Turkey.

Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan underscored that there is no topic to examine with Greece, pointing out that “we may suddenly come one night." This statement was described as a threat to Greece.

Scholz told the Greek newspaper Ta Nea: “It is not acceptable for one Nato partner to challenge the sovereignty of another. This also applies to more or less veiled military threats.”

Scholz said in a press conference: “Good neighbourly relations between Greece and Turkey are not only significant for both countries, but for the whole of Europe and the transatlantic alliance."

“I am sure that all the questions that exist can, and must, be solved via dialogue on the basis of international law.”

Greece and Turkey escalated over the processes of drilling, migration, and the situation of Cyprus.

In the same context, Mitsotakis said he hoped “our neighbours will choose the road of de-escalation, of legality, of peaceful co-existence without rhetorical outbursts but with constructive actions”.

He added: “On my side, they will always find me ready to extend a hand of friendship. We don’t have any room for further needless sources of tension."

During the visit, Scholz visited the Acropolis before his talks with the Greek Prime Minister.
