In response to the recent deadly attack in Solingen, Germany announced on Thursday a series of stricter measures concerning the carrying of knives and the provision of aid to certain asylum seekers.

The move comes after the attack, which occurred six days ago, left three people dead and has since sparked widespread concern.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the government's firm response during a press conference in Berlin, stating that the Solingen attack has profoundly shocked the nation.

The measures include a ban on carrying knives, particularly at festivals, fairs, and on long-distance transportation such as trains and buses.

Additionally, the German government plans to withdraw aid from asylum seekers who had entered another European Union country before arriving in Germany.

Faeser also highlighted ongoing efforts to expedite the deportation of dangerous criminals to countries such as Afghanistan and Syria.

The ruling coalition of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which includes the Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals, is under increasing pressure following the attack.

This comes ahead of regional elections in eastern Germany, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is expected to perform strongly.

The attack in Solingen has reignited debates around immigration and public safety in Germany.

In recent years, Germany has experienced several attacks, with the deadliest occurring in December 2016 when a truck plowed through a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.

During the Solingen festival, attended by thousands, a 26-year-old Syrian man, suspected of having links to the terrorist group ISIS, allegedly carried out the knife attack.

The assault resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 56 and 67, and a 56-year-old woman, with eight others injured, four of them seriously. After a 24-hour manhunt, the suspect surrendered to authorities, claiming responsibility for the attack.
