The spokesman for Germany`s Foreign Ministry in the Middle East and North Africa, Denis Cometat confirmed Wednesday that his country supports the efforts of the United Nations in Libya to end the crisis.

In a Tweet, Cometat answered the question “Does Germany support a certain side in Libya?" Saying: “We recognize, like the international community as a whole, the government of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, recognized by the United Nations, but this does not mean that we are "taking side in the conflict itself."

The German Foreign Ministry spokesman added: “Through our policy, we want to contribute to creating framework conditions that enable the Libyan people to decide their own political, social, and economic destiny, independently and without influence from foreign powers, to make this goal possible. The ceasefire must now be implemented what the representatives of the military forces reached through negotiation. We reject the presence of foreign fighters in the country. Germany categorically supports the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya."
