Germany is set to increase its financial assistance program for Syrian citizens who wish to return to their home country, following the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.

A spokesperson from the German Ministry of the Interior confirmed the development on Friday, according to Reuters.

The spokesperson stated, "We aim to expand the program in the future for those who wish to voluntarily leave," adding that Germany will provide travel expenses of €200 ($205) and an additional €1,000 to help start a business for each adult wishing to depart.

Despite this initiative, the spokesperson noted that "the situation remains unclear regarding large-scale return movements," highlighting the uncertain nature of repatriation plans.

This announcement coincides with the arrival of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Damascus, where they are scheduled to meet with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the head of Syria’s new transitional administration.

Their visit marks the first high-level visit by Western officials to Syria since the fall of Assad's regime.
