Germany has prevented 12,000 illegal border crossings since the introduction of tighter checks in May, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced on Sunday.

Speaking to public broadcaster ARD, he explained that the figure includes around 660 asylum seekers.

The stricter border inspection measures were introduced on 8 May, shortly after the new conservative-led coalition government took office. Under Dobrindt’s directive, border police were instructed not only to increase checks but also to turn back asylum seekers at entry points, a policy that remains the subject of legal dispute.

When asked whether the government would impose a cap on migration, Dobrindt declined to provide a specific figure.

However, he stressed that Germany had reached the limits of integration capacity and social pressure after a decade of rising migration, adding that the government now needed to correct course to ease what he described as an excessive burden on the country.
