Georgia confirmed the first two cases of the new Omicron variant, Agenda News Paper reported on Monday.

Head of Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control, Amiran Gamkrelidze, revealed that inpiduals who have the new variant feel fine and are undergoing treatment at home.

"Both inpiduals have mild symptoms,” Gamkrelidze said, warning that a "rapid surge in new infections is less expected, at least until the New Year."

"Omicron will need at least two months to replace the Delta variant in Georgia,” he mentioned, calling on people to get the coronavirus shot and a booster dose.

The country has reported 1,296 new cases of coronavirus, 4,127 recoveries, and 45 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to the report.

In November, WHO renamed the new B.1.1.529 strain of COVID-19 as Omicron.

“Based on the evidence presented indicative of a detrimental change in Covid-19 epidemiology… the WHO has designated B.1.1.529 as a variant of concern, named Omicron,” the U.N. health agency said in a statement.
