For the first time since the war in October 2023, schools in Gaza have officially reopened, marking a significant step toward restoring education in the war-torn region.

The Palestinian Ministry of Education announced that the new school year began on Sunday, despite the widespread devastation caused by the Israeli military offensive.

In a press conference held at Al-Nasr Model School in Gaza City, officials highlighted the immense challenges facing students and teachers.

More than 80% of schools in the region have been destroyed, forcing authorities to set up makeshift classrooms in tents and alternative learning sites to accommodate hundreds of thousands of students.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances, students arrived at their learning locations without school uniforms, as essential supplies, including textbooks and notebooks, remain scarce.

The Ministry of Education emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all children in Gaza have access to education despite the severe obstacles.

Classes are being held in the remaining functional schools, renovated facilities, and temporary learning centers established across different areas.

Additionally, remote learning options are available via virtual platforms such as Teams and Wise School for students unable to attend in person.

Authorities urged teachers, students, and parents to cooperate in overcoming the difficulties of this academic year.

They also called on displaced families still sheltering in school buildings to vacate classrooms so they can be used for educational purposes.

The reopening of schools is seen as a vital step in rebuilding the future of Gaza’s children, despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis and severe shortages of resources.
