Barcelona have been dealt a fresh blow ahead of their upcoming La Liga fixture, as the club confirmed on Saturday that young midfielder Pablo Páez Gavira, known as Gavi, sustained a knee problem and will miss the match against Rayo Vallecano in the third round of the Spanish league.
A medical statement from the Catalan club revealed that Gavi is suffering from discomfort in his right knee and will be sidelined for Sunday’s game.
His condition will be assessed daily to determine his availability for future fixtures.
Club sources indicated that the 20-year-old withdrew from Friday’s training session after experiencing pain in the same knee, prompting immediate medical attention to prevent further complications.
According to Mundo Deportivo, initial assessments suggest the injury is not severe, but additional tests will be carried out in the coming days to rule out any issues linked to his previous long-term injury.
Gavi’s injury history remains a concern at Camp Nou, as he was sidelined for nearly a year following a full rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his right knee in November 2023, a serious setback that required surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
The timing of this latest setback adds to the challenges facing coach Hansi Flick, with limited midfield options available and less than 48 hours before the Rayo clash. Barcelona will hold their final training session on Saturday morning before traveling for the match.
