Gennaro Gattuso has resigned as head coach of the Italy national team following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a third consecutive absence from the tournament for the four-time champions.

Italy’s hopes were dashed after a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tuesday’s play-off match, extending a disappointing run that has raised concerns about the direction of the national side.

In a joint statement, the Italian Football Federation confirmed that Gattuso’s contract had been mutually terminated, bringing an end to his 10-month tenure.

Gattuso acknowledged the disappointment in his departure statement, saying he believed stepping aside was the right decision after failing to meet expectations.

He emphasized the importance of allowing the federation to reassess its technical direction moving forward.

The resignation comes amid wider leadership changes within Italian football. Federation president Gabriele Gravina and head of delegation Gianluigi Buffon have also left their roles, signaling a broader restructuring effort.

Italy now enters a rebuilding phase as officials begin the search for a new manager tasked with restoring the national team’s competitiveness ahead of future international competitions.
