The funeral of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said, just started in the Omani capital of Muscat.  Sultan Qaboos died on Friday evening, at the age of 79, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA)  agency quoted the Royal Court.

On Saturday, the Oman TV announced the inauguration of Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman, to succeed Sultan Qaboos.

The nation's defense council had called on the Council of the Royal Family Saturday to convene to determine who will succeed Sultan Qaboos and take the rule of the country after Qaboos`s death.

Sultan Qaboos has ruled the Sultanate of Oman since he assumed power in 1970; he had no children and no successor was announced.

The Basic Law of the Sultanate of Oman, which was established in 1996, says the royal family chooses a successor within 3 days of the throne being vacated.

If the royal family does not reach an agreement, a council that includes military and security officials, heads of the Supreme Court and the presidents of the State and Shura Councils shall announce the assumption of the person whom the Sultan has secretly named in a closed letter to succeed him.
