Walid Regragui will continue to lead the Moroccan national team, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed in an official statement today, denying circulating reports suggesting his departure.
The federation emphasized: “We categorically deny all reports claiming a separation from coach Walid Regragui and reaffirm our full confidence in his leadership of the senior national team.”
Speculation about Regragui’s future had intensified following Morocco’s narrow 1-0 loss to Senegal national football team in the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final on January 18.
Some media outlets suggested he might not lead the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the historic achievement of guiding Morocco to fourth place at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Reports also highlighted the psychological toll on Regragui after the AFCON defeat, with concerns over whether he remains the right figure to steer the “Atlas Lions” through the next chapter.
If a future change were to occur, Spanish coach Xavi Hernández, former manager of FC Barcelona, is reportedly among the top candidates to take over ahead of the World Cup.
